DSL Is Ideal For Hotels

A DSL solution, however, is relatively inexpensive, is non-disruptive to hotel operations, and requires no construction. DSL provides high-speed Internet over the existing telephone lines that are already in place and run to each guest and meeting room. A DSL modem is installed in each guest room that provides a telephone jack for the phone as well as an Ethernet port for connection into the guest’s laptop. The voice and the data both run over the same cable and guests can talk on the phone and surf the Internet at the same time. In the main telephone/computer room DSL switches are installed that separate out the voice traffic from the data traffic. The voice traffic connects to the phone switch and the data traffic connects to the Internet.

Security
A DSL solution is a secure solution for a hotel providing high-speed Internet service. Each guest is a member of their own private VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network). This ensures that a guest’s traffic cannot be viewed by other hotel guests.

Again, if a guest utilizes VPN software to connect to their corporate network, their traffic will be securely encrypted from their computer all the way to their corporate network.

Benefits & Considerations
Deploying a DSL solution in a hotel offers several benefits. Most guests will come with all of the equipment that they need to connect to a wired network. A DSL solution is also relatively inexpensive. While it may cost more than a wireless solution, it is still tremendously less expensive than re-wiring the entire hotel. It is also a very non-disruptive installation. There is no new cabling run throughout the building. The majority of the work is done in the main telephone/computer room. Another benefit to a DSL solution is that it satisfies the requirement of government employees. Government employees are only allowed to connect to public access networks that are hard-wired.

DSL has some limitations compared to wireless networks. The guest must connect to the port by the desk, and is limited to that immediate area. The guest cannot roam and use the service by the pool, the lobby, or in the restaurants and bars. DSL is also more costly than a wireless network.
